STANBRIDGE, two manors and deserted medieval village in Romsey
'Stone bridge' (1236 'Stanbrige') spanning the Test. Cf AWBRIDGE. The two manors in the 14th century were distinguished as 'Earls (Comitis)' and 'Ranville'; the former was held of the Earl Marshal (initially by Simon de Montfort) and the latter by the de Raunvile (Ranville) family, hailing from 'Ranville' (Calvados, Normandy).
